What you eat can have a dramatic effect on the progression of Parkinson’s Disease. This six week interactive nutrition workshop will help you transform your diet and thrive while living with Parkinson’s.  Each week will cover a new topic including foods that help slow progression, managing symptoms and side effects, dietary supplements and strategies for implementing long term changes.

  

 

Class 1 – Brain Food – The Nutrition and Parkinson’s Connection

In class 1, we will review the latest research about nutrition and Parkinson’s, the foods that help slow progression and creative ways to incorporate them into your everyday diet. Come prepared to share your favorite recipe!

 

Class 2 – Anti-inflammatory Eating for Parkinson’s 

Inflammation is an underlying cause of chronic disease, including Parkinson’s. Class 2 focuses on aspects of an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle as well as ways to add in anti-inflammatory foods and beverages everyday.

Class 3 – Nutrition and Gut Health

Good digestion is essential for overall health – including the brain. In class 3 we will review the research on the gut and brain connection, strategies for improving digestion and eating strategies for multiple digestive complaints associated with Parkinson’s.

Class 4 – Taming your Sugar Cravings

Sugar cravings affect many people, especially those with Parkinson’s. Lower levels of dopamine can increase your desire for sugar. In class 4, we will review strategies to help balance your blood sugar, manage cravings, and live in harmony with the sweet foods among us.

Class 5 – Dietary Supplements for Parkinson’s and Brain Health

While everyone has individual needs when it comes to dietary supplements, some have evidence for being beneficial for people with Parkinson’s.  In class 5, we will review the evidence for some of the most common dietary supplements used in Parkinson’s as well as ways to make sure you are safely taking them.

Class 6 – Staying the Course – How to Maintain the Diet and Lifestyle Long Term

Long term adherence to a healthy diet and lifestyle will give you the most dramatic benefits when living with Parkinson’s. In class 6, we will explore ways to find and keep your motivation. If you are struggling to make changes or find yourself slipping back into old habits, this class will give you ideas and strategies for getting back on track and increasing your consistency.

About the instructor:

Kelly Morrow

MS, RDN, FAND


is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Co- Editor of the nutrition textbook Krause and Mahan’s Food and the Nutrition Care Process. She is currently practicing at Seattle Integrative Medicine with Drs. Laurie Mischley and Sam Evans who specialize in Parkinson’s care. Kelly has also been on the faculty at Bastyr University since 2002 where she teaches clinical nutrition and supervises rotations at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health. She has maintained a private practice since 2000 and has previously worked at Evergreen Hospital in radiation oncology, the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Center and in Community Health Promotions.
